The Basics of MS Word


Part 1
Activity 1
Cut and Paste

1. Type the following: 
I want to move.  I want to stay.
2. Highlight "I want to move."
3. Click on Edit on the toolbar.
4. Click on Cut.
5. Move your cursor to the end of the sentence, I want to stay, and click on Enter on your keyboard so you go down a line.
6. Now go to Edit again on the toolbar and click on Paste.


Part 2
Read
Tables
Tables are used to display data and there are several ways to build them in Word. Begin by placing the cursor where you want the table to appear in the document and choose one of the following methods.

Activity 2
Insert a Table using the Insert feature
:
1. Click the Insert Table button   on the standard toolbar. Drag the mouse along the grid, highlighting the 2 rows (horizontal) and 3 columns (vertical) for the table.

2. Fill in the information shown below.

Read
Font Size
In Microsoft Word you can change the size of your font the following exercise will walk you through this process.

Activity 3
Changing Font Size
:
1. Type the following: 
I am the smallest. I am a little bigger. I am the largest.
2. Highlight "I am the smallest. 
3. In the font size box change the font size to 8.
4. Highlight "I am a little bigger."
5. In the font size box change the font size to 14.
6. Highlight "I am the largest."
7. In the font size box change the font size to 24.


Part 4
Read
Word Art

The Word 2000  WordArt tool, replaces the WordArt program from earlier versions of Microsoft Office and Word. You can create these special effects from either the Insert | Picture | WordArt... menu or by a mouse click on the Insert WordArt Drawing toolbar icon, it looks like a slanted blue uppercase letter A with a shadow to the right.  WordArt is actually a graphic and not a text font.

Activity 4
Adding WordArt
:
1. Click on the Insert button on the toolbar.
2. Click on Picture and then find  and click on WordArt and the following menu will appear.

3. Select a WordArt style to apply in your document and the following menu will appear.

Edit WordArt Text

4. Type hello and click on OK.


Part 5
Read
Spell Check
Word checks your spelling and grammar as you type.  A red line under that appears under text means that a word is spelt wrong.  A green line under a word means that there is a grammar problem.

Activity 5
Spell Check
:
1. Type the following exactly as shown.  Include all errors.
Open thd door for Maralai.  She is a teacher from the town of Ridgemount.
2. Click on the Spelling button
3. "The" is mispelled so it is highlighted on the screen.  Word will suggest the correct spelling choose the correct one and click on the Click on Change button.
4. The name Maralai is not in the dictionary but is correct.  Press Ignore to leave Maralai in the document with the current spelling.
5. Next the word Ridgemount will appear as misspelled, however it is spelled correctly.  If the word is used frequently click on the Add.
6. The following should appear on your screen: "Word finished checking the selection.  Do you want to continue checking the remainder of the document.  Click on No and you are finished.

Activity 6
Undo and Redo
1. Type Undo example and press Return on the keyboard to skip a line.
2. Type Hello Everyone
3. Highlight Hello Everyone. Press Enter.
4. The typing should disappear.
5. Click on Edit.
6. Click on Undo Typing.
7. The typing should reappear.
8. Highlight Undo example.
9. Press the Apple key on the keyboard and b at the same time to bold the text.
10. Click on Edit.
11. Click Undo Bold.

Activity 7
Saving your Work
1. Click on File.
2.  Click on Save as.
3. Double click on your period folder.
4. Save as your last name word 2 .
5. If you don't save it correctly it will be erased.
6. Begin on the next tutorial
